Man charged with attacking US Marshals with a hammer during Portland protest

A Texan has been charged with attacking a member of the US Marshals with a hammer during a protest in Portland, Oregon.

Jacob Michael Gaines was filmed attacking the USMS deputy with the DeWalt hammer on Saturday, after he attempted to bring down a US Courthouse barricade. In the video, Gaines can be seen waiting with the hammer raised as the officers came through a door, then swinging it as they came through.

Despite being struck three times, the deputy marshal was not seriously injured and restrained Gaines long enough so that others could cuff him.

Gaines, who is reportedly homeless, is living in an RV in Portland and made his initial appearance on Monday.

According to FOX 12, he was released from custody on the same day, pending further court proceedings.

The Federal Courthouse has been a hotbed of activity.

“For several weeks, the Hatfield Federal Courthouse has been a repeated target of vandalism during evening protests and riots, sustaining extensive damage. US Marshals Service deputies and officers from the Federal Protective Service, Homeland Security Investigations, and US Customs and Border Protection working to protect the courthouse have been subjected to nightly threats and assaults from demonstrators while performing their duties,” according to the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon.
