A man was taken into custody early Friday morning after police said he fired multiple rounds at Gainesville officers.
The officers were responding to a report of an intoxicated person at the HomeTowne Studios extended stay motel on Jesse Jewell Parkway when they encountered the man, according to Gainesville police.

“As officers attempted to make contact, the subject immediately produced a firearm and began firing,” police said on Facebook.

The man was taken into custody before anyone was injured.

The GBI has not said if it will investigate the officer-involved shooting, which happened hours after a Cobb County officer was shot in the head in an exchange of gunfire with a carjacking suspect.

The suspect, whose name was not released, was killed. The injured officer is expected to make a full recovery, according to Cobb County police.

That incident was the 51st officer-involved shooting the GBI has investigated this year. If confirmed, the Gainesville shooting would be the 52nd.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also tracks officer-involved shootings that don’t involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the GBI’s tally.
