LA City Council President calls for $150 million in police cuts, while her home is protected by personal LAPD detail

Update: Following a major backlash over her hypocrisy, L.A. City Council President Nury Martinez will be ending her personal LAPD detail after calling to defund the department.

Earlier: The City Council President of Los Angeles may be looking to cut $150 million from the LAPD’s budget- but it isn’t her who will be hurting.

As Nury Martinez filed the defunding motion last week, her home was surrounded by a private security detail provided by the LAPD.

In what seems to be a case of “for thee, but not for me,” Martinez seemed to be in no hurry to relieve her 24/7 security detail when it came to protecting her own life and property.

Martinez’s words stung the LAPD, and the harshness of her tone came in stark contrast to her need for a detail.

“We need a vision for our city that says ‘there is going to be justice.’ American society is founded on a racial hierarchy, one that is born out of slavery, followed by Jim Crow segregation and corporate abuse of labor,” she wrote. “As such, police departments are asked to enforce a system of laws that are designed to reinforce and maintain economic and racial inequality.”

Detective Jamie McBride, a director for the LAPD’s union, could not get past the irony.

“It’s kind of ironic. Here she is demanding $150 million be reallocated from the police budget, but yet she has security at her house by the Los Angeles Police Department,” the detective said.

According to Spectrum News 1, Martinez often has at up to two officers outside of her home on security details.
