A man wanted in a Jacksonville-area homicide is dead following a Tuesday-afternoon shootout with law enforcement in Laurel, Md., that left one officer injured, according to police.
The dead man, presumed to be 37-year-old Shawn Lequin Braddy, was shot as officers were trying to arrest him in the community about 20 miles northeast of Washington, according to the Montgomery County Police Department.
“MCP officers have been involved in a shooting in Prince George’s County. MCP officers were attempting to arrest a suspect wanted for a homicide that occurred in Jacksonville,” the department said. “One MCP officer was shot by the suspect. The officer’s condition is unknown at this time. The suspect is deceased.”
Officers were setting up police tape in a parking lot outside of some townhomes and apartments near Muirkirk Road after the incident, according to WUSA-TV. Multiple officers from Montgomery County were involved in the shooting, the department said.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office issued an alert for Braddy following the shooting death of his former girlfriend on Grayson Lane in the Oakleaf area. Family and friends identified her as 33-year-old Tiara McDaniel.
Braddy had two domestic-violence injunctions filed against him in Duval County by different women, one in 2013 and the other 2017, according to court records. The 2013 petition was filed by McDaniel, saying he was “an angry person” who shoved a gun in her mouth in 2010, then sexually assaulted her, the petition said. That resulted in his arrest and conviction for battery, serving three years in jail, court records said.
McDaniel’s GoFundMe page is seeking help for her children. It states she was killed “by her abusive children’s father” and leaves behind four of her own children as well as a younger brother she was caring for after her mother also was murdered.
