A longtime Chesapeake obstetrician-gynecologist accused of performing unnecessary surgeries on women for years was found guilty Monday of 52 counts of fraud, but was acquitted of eight others.
The maximum possible sentence that Dr. Javaid Perwaiz faces is up to 465 years in prison, according to a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Sentencing is scheduled for March 31.
Perwaiz, 70, stood stoically, with his hands clasped in front of him, as the verdicts were read. His trial began Oct. 14 in U.S. District Court in Norfolk.
More than 50 witnesses testified, and included many of the doctor’s former patients. Only two people testified for the defense — Perwaiz and an anesthesiologist who worked with Perwaiz for decades.
