An off-duty Kern County deputy fatally shot a suspect who was attempting to carjack his personal vehicle while traveling northbound on Highway 99, sheriff’s officials said Sunday.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office in a Sunday news release said officers with the Bakersfield Police Department were dispatched to a call of a residential burglary about 8:45 a.m. in the 3600 block of Eisenhower Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers learned the suspect fled in a stolen vehicle after the burglary, according to the release. The suspect crashed in the 3400 block of Eisenhower Avenue before fleeing on foot onto Highway 99 north of White Lane.

“The suspect stopped an off-duty Kern County Sheriff’s Office deputy, who was traveling northbound in his personal vehicle,” the release says. “The suspect entered the vehicle in an attempt to steal the vehicle. During the carjacking, a physical struggle ensued and the deputy shot the suspect.”

The suspect, who was only described as an adult Hispanic man, died of his injuries at the scene, according to the release.

The incident is being investigated by the Bakersfield Police Department and the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect hadn’t been identified as of Sunday afternoon, according to the release. The Kern County Coroner’s Office will release that information after family is notified.

“Due to the ongoing investigation, the deputy’s name is not being released at this time,” the release says. “The deputy sustained minor injuries as a result of the physical altercation inside the vehicle.”

As routine practice, the deputy was been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation, according to the release.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact the Kern County Sheriff’s Office at 661-861-3110 or the Secret Witness Hotline at 661-322-4040.
