Prince George’s County Interim Police Chief Hector Velez faced reporters on Sunday night, detailing the incident that involved three police officers being shot during an ambush in the Maryland city of Hyattsville.
“Within seconds of arriving, they were under fire,” Velez recounted.
The incident, which took place at 6:30 PM, was initially reported to be a home invasion, though it ultimately turned out to be an ambush.
While two of the three officers involved were “saved” by their ballistic vests, one officer was shot in the back, while another sustained a chest wound. Other injuries included wounds to the officers’ extremities.
Despite being wounded, the officers returned fire but struck no hits.
According to the Baltimore Sun, two men were taken into custody without sustaining injuries.
The officers involved were transported to a local hospital where they were treated.
